They&#8217;re doing it because the migration itself sounds risky: dropped calls during the switch, lost numbers, a week of confused clients wondering why nobody&#8217;s picking up.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Done properly, none of that has to happen. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/phones-and-broadband\/landline-phones\/future-of-landline-calls\">landline-to-VoIP transition<\/a> is one of the more low-risk technical changes a small business will make this year, as long as it&#8217;s sequenced correctly. This guide walks through exactly that sequence.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s also a deadline attached to this one. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/telecommunications-modernisation\">UK&#8217;s Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)<\/a> closes on 31 January 2027, the date Openreach retires the copper phone network that traditional landlines and ISDN lines run on. This isn&#8217;t one provider&#8217;s commercial decision but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openreach.com\/\">Openreach<\/a> withdrawing the underlying copper phone service, which affects customers of every UK provider that sells on top of it.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original deadline was December 2025. BT and Openreach pushed it to 31 January 2027 in May 2024, giving communications providers an extra 13 months to migrate customers safely, largely because of concerns about vulnerable users on telecare devices. Openreach has since said it doesn&#8217;t expect a further extension.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more useful number is how much is still outstanding. At the six-months-to-go mark, Openreach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openreach.com\/news\/openreach-warns-businesses-just-six-months-left-before-the-uks-old-phone-network-is-switched-off\/\">estimated<\/a> around 1.5 million lines still running on copper, roughly 350,000 of them at business premises. Those are the businesses competing for the same engineers and the same installation slots in the final quarter.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waiting also costs money before it costs service. Openreach has confirmed tiered price increases on legacy Wholesale Line Rental products, so the longer a copper line stays active, the more it bills.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s a second deadline most businesses miss entirely. Before any line is physically switched off, its exchange area goes into stop-sell: you can no longer order new copper services or modify the ones you have. Stop-sell is already in force across most of the country. If you can&#8217;t add a line or change a package today, your migration window has already started, whatever the national date says.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of this requires panic. How many lines are active. Which ones are genuinely used rather than just paid for out of habit. Which numbers are printed on invoices, websites and vehicle signage. And which devices depend on a phone line to function: alarm systems, lift lines, card payment terminals, door entry systems and fax lines are the common surprises here.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This step gets skipped more than any other, usually because &#8220;we&#8217;ll figure it out as we go&#8221; feels faster. It isn&#8217;t.
